While there are many great games to play this year, Overwatch is one of the newest titles that has managed to impress people beyond belief with its great gameplay and fun mechanics. At its core, this is a 6v6 game where you either have to conquer specific objectives or lead the payload towards the enemy base. Despite being very similar to a MOBA and even if it has a striking resemblance to Team Fortress 2, Overwatch still delivers a great gaming experience that will keep you coming back for many hours to come.
What makes Overwatch stand out is definitely its unique set of characters. There are more than 20 characters to choose from and each one has different attacks. For example, you have Hanzo which is a bow wielder then you also have Tracer which is focused on time manipulation. You also get the Widowmaker that takes the role of Overwatch’s sniper and many other cool characters like Junkrat, Mercy, Lucio, Pharas and others join in the fun as well.
Each one of these characters has its own special attack that will load as you play. The more kills you do the faster your ultimate attack will load and this will be devastating for the enemy team. Overwatch is focused quite a lot on the strategic element and the game does a very good job at offering multiple ways to attack any point/base. Plus, team mates can easily combine specific characters in order to better cope with the enemy threats.
The gun play is great and the fact that each character plays differently does encourage experimentation. Thankfully, even if you get tired of a specific character you can still play any of the others and that on its own does provide a very good value to the entire experience. There is no overpowered character, all of them were balanced to ensure that all players get a very good, fun and exciting gameplay.
They did integrate a good competitive mode that takes place in multiple seasons. However, even if you don’t like the ranked mode, you can still access a great Quick Play that’s played by many people and finding a match doesn’t take that much time to begin with.
The combination of attack, defense, tank and healing characters offers you plenty of options. The game does a very good job when it comes to constantly delivering new challenges and that on its own can be very rewarding to begin with.
Despite being a very good and addictive game, Overwatch does come with its own set of flaws. There are only 12 maps and while others might be added gradually, you can get tired of them very fast. Plus, some of the maps do tend to encourage the use of specific characters such as Bastion and that might lower the overall appeal of the gameplay. These issues are rare though and they don’t impact the game that much to begin with.
If you like the idea of playing a good team-based shooter then Overwatch is definitely one of the games to check out. Sure, the game modes are simplistic and there aren’t that many maps but the gameplay is great and it does encourage strategic thinking. Plus, the ability to find a game in roughly a minute is extraordinary, so you don’t have to worry about the lack of potential competitors. You just have to train yourself and be fully prepared as Overwatch is always full of challenges!
